news icon Katie Holmes Makes Official Debut on Broadway
Katie Holmes made her official debut on Broadway last night at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in the Arthur Miller classic World War II drama “All My Sons,” joining an elite cast and braving the star-studded audience, the critics and the anti-Scientology protesters outside.

Stepping on that stage must be nerve-wracking even for veteran theater actors and the more so for a neophyte who is famous for having married Hollywood star Tom Cruise and whose life is picked apart in tabloids on a daily basis.

Seated in the audience for opening night were Isabella Rossellini, Patricia Clarkson, Blythe Danner, Barbara Walters, Dennis Farina, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Arthur Miller’s daughter, filmmaker Rebecca Miller.

Holmes’ husband, Tom Cruise, was also there, as he was last month for the first night of preview performances.

Katie Holmes joins an esteemed cast made up of multiple Emmy Award and Tony Award winner John Lithgow, two-time Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest and the younger Tony-, Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated Patrick Wilson.

Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” opened on Broadway at the Coronet Theatre in New York City in January 1947, directed by Elia Kazan. It received the 1947 Tony Award for Best Play.

In the current stage production, directed by Simon McBurney, Holmes plays a supporting role as Ann, a young woman whose fiancé has died in the war and who visits his parents, portrayed by Wiest and Lithgow. Wilson plays the surviving son, an idealistic young man who has fallen in love with his late brother’s sweetheart.

The stage revival’s first full week of previews earned $684,002, becoming the highest-grossing play on Broadway.

All My Sons starring Katie Holmes was the highest-grossing play on Broadway last week, taking in $684,002 for its first full week.

The Arthur Miller play put on eight preview performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, and played to nearly 98 per cent capacity at the 1,052-seat theatre.

Katie received rave reviews for her performance, which was described by husband Tom Cruise as "extraordinary".

The play -- which also stars John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest and Patrick Wilson -- opens officially on October 16.

It has a top ticket price of $116.50 with premium tickets for certain performances reaching $300.

news icon Holmes wows critics with Broadway debut
KATIE HOLMES was met with a standing ovation from critics after her first performance on Broadway in dramatic stage play ALL MY SONS.

The actress took to the stage on Thursday night (18Sep08) for a preview performance - less than a month before the show is scheduled to open its curtains to the public.

Holmes drew a star-studded crowd to the show, including husband Tom Cruise - who hailed her performance as 'extraordinary' and was joined by his Rain Man co-star Dustin Hoffman in the audience.

Now critics have piled in to echo the Hollywood actor, praising Holmes' skill in the Arthur Miller play.

In a review from the Associated Press, one critic says: "If Holmes felt nervous and jittery, she didn't show it. She delivered her lines with confidence and projected her girlish voice so it could be heard loud and clear.

"She danced around on stage with gusto. She looked lovely in two dresses that highlighted her trim yet shapely figure."

A theatregoer and friend of Holmes, New Yorker Nadja Forbes, adds: "She brings this fresh breeze of air not only in her acting but also in her dialogue that kind of breaks up the seriousness of what's going on. I'm actually surprised that she's, you know, enough of an actress for being on Broadway."

The show, which co-stars John Lithgow, Dianne Wiest and Patrick Wilson officially opens 16 October (08).

news icon Katie Faces Tough Competition, but No One Can Steal Her Show
Tom Cruise is really proud of Katie and so are critics. Katie Holmes’ much talked about Broadway debut took place on Thursday in the midst of anti-Scientology protests.

Although they were not demonstrating against the actress’ acting, more than two dozen picketers kept on shouting, “Free Katie, Keep Tom,” outside the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Broadway just before the curtain rose.

However, nothing could hold Katie down, as she won critics’ acclaim for her performance in the revival of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons.”

One could say that Tom Cruise, 46, the “Dawson Creek” star’s spouse, stole the show, as he was the main attraction of the evening, drawing a standing ovation from the audience, but Katie did not let down either. Dustin Hoffman also attended the heavily discussed play’s first preview and the “Mission: Impossible” celebrity did not fail to hug the fellow actor, who was sitting just a few rows away.

Katie Holmes, 29, looked stunning in a royal blue dress and appeared on stage next to prominent figures such as multiple Emmy Award and Tony Award winner John Lithgow, two-time Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest and Patrick Wilson. In spite of the A-list cast, Katie did not disappoint her fans and even surpassed all expectations...
